The Siena women's lacrosse team made history on Saturday at Hickey Field, as they demolished MAAC newcomer Rider with a record-breaking 22-4 victory. Despite challenging weather conditions, including rain, sleet, and snow, the Saints delivered a masterful performance to set a new program record for the largest margin of victory in their 28-year history.
The previous record for the largest margin of victory had been 17 goals, achieved on two occasions. Sarah Irish's goal in the final moments of the game pushed the lead to 18, ensuring that a new record would be set. This victory also matched a program record for the most goals scored in a single game, tying the 22-goal mark set against Hartford on March 13, 2019.
Siena dominated in nearly every aspect of the game, particularly in draw controls, where they won an impressive 26 out of 30 as a team. Senior Taryn Asselin had a standout performance, setting a new single-game program record for most draw controls with 15. Asselin had previously tied the record earlier in the season and came close to breaking it in another game against Army West Point.
Despite being in their first season of women's lacrosse, Rider had shown promise with a strong start to their season. However, the Saints' defense proved too strong for the Broncs, limiting their top player Katie Walsh to just two draw controls and one goal.
Offensively, junior Grace Dobrzynski led the Saints with an eight-point performance, while junior Kelly Logue surpassed 100 career points with a six-point game. Siena dominated from the start, leading 7-1 at the end of the first quarter and extending their lead to 13-3 by halftime. They continued to dominate in the second half, outscoring Rider 9-1 to secure the victory.
Defensively, graduate student Jenna Colabufo stood out with four caused turnovers, reaching a milestone of 50 for her career at Siena. The Saints' defense held Rider, who had been averaging nearly 15 goals per game, to just nine shots and six goals on goal.
With this victory, Siena extended their winning streak to four games and continued their strong form, keeping their opponents to single-digit scoring in five of their last six victories.
